An Ode to Olena – Turmeric Poem

There is hysteria in America over Tumeric.

Also known as turmeric; have you heard of it?

It is a rhizome, or horizontal root forming lateral shoots.

Native to the most ancient of India, the Vedic sages there named her Haridra.

Now it is known to grow all over Africa,

as well as locales around Latin America.

On the Hawaiian Islands, her name is Olena. Bright yellow-Orange,

she dyes the robes of saints, tints her sisters saris and makes a fine paint.

Yes she stains everything in reach, everything that is, except teeth. These she

will whiten, and heal gum disease with her anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial qualities.

And did I mention her many antioxidant, antiseptic,

antitumor, antiviral, antibacterial activities?

Called Curcuma longa in Latin, consumed daily she frees the body from pain.

Curcumin detoxes Rakta, loves up the liver, kidneys, and oxygenates the brain.

No herb is more studied, and these studies suggest

the herb resists Alzheimer’s, cures cancers, and puts arthritis to rest.

Cleaning the blood means cleanest of skin.

Brides-to-be bathe in the Haldi to expose the Golden Goddess within.

Pungent and bitter, she melds flavors together.

Olena is most potent mixed with fats and black pepper.

Dry and light, Haridra is hot post-digestion.

Soothing kapha and vata, she is Queen of pitta expulsion.

So invite the blessèd spice of life into all of your bodies.

Turmeric can help you unclog subtle nadis.

Olena removes all negative vibes,

Offering healthy, golden, elongated lives.

Whether ingested or topical, root, powder or pill,

just get her in you, and be happier, you will.
